What are you up to tonight? : 오늘 밤에 뭐 해?

What are you up to tomorrow? : 내일 뭐 해?

Erica : You'd better leave now to beat the traffic.

     I'm going to catch up on some sleep.

(윗분이나 조심해야 하는 사이에서는 좀 반말스러운 느낌)

beat the traffic

beat대신  avoid를 써도 되는데

beat the traffic은 차가 막히기 시작하기 전에 미리 일찍 출발한다는 말이고

avoid the traffic은 차가 막히는 시간을 피해서 전후로 나선다는 말

 

beat은 뭔가를 기다리다는 뜻이 내포되어 있어서 미리 출발한다는 뜻

avoid는 피하다는 말이니까 미리 가든 늦게 가든 막히는 것만 피한다는 뜻
